Stop the conversion of Holy Rosary school into a homeless shelter

Stop the conversion of Holy Rosary school into a homeless shelter
The Issue
The proposed conversion of the old Holy Rosary school on the corner of Beach Road and Gage Avenue in Hamilton, Ontario, into a homeless shelter for drug addicts, has raised significant concerns among local residents. The Salvation Army plans to move its shelter from York Street, near the new TD Arena, to this location, but many community members feel this move is inappropriate and not in the best interest of our neighborhood.
The community of Hamilton deserves to have a say in the developments that occur in our area, especially when they directly impact our safety, property values, and daily lives. It seems like a recurring theme that facilities for homeless individuals and those struggling with addiction are disproportionately placed in certain neighborhoods, often without the consent or input of the residents who live there. This not only affects the residents but also the individuals the shelters aim to support, who deserve facilities that meet their needs in appropriate environments.
Instead of continuing this pattern, it's crucial that local government and organizations consider alternative locations that ensure equitable distribution of support services throughout the city, and which are developed in consideration of potential social and economic impacts. Situating such facilities near community centers, schools, and family zones may not be ideal for any party involved.
We propose that local politicians and city planners prioritize community input and engage in a transparent dialogue with residents before making irrevocable decisions. Alternative sites that may be better suited for such shelters should be explored, taking into account infrastructure, accessibility, and community integration.
Sign this petition to urge the city of Hamilton and the Salvation Army to reconsider their plans and to collaborate with residents to find a more suitable location that aligns with the community's needs and concerns. Together, let's work toward a solution that is fair for all parties involved and prioritizes both compassion and community welfare. Your voice matters—stand with us to make it heard.
