The Issue

The city of Petaluma is planning to spend taxpayer money on a roundabout at Rainier and Maria Streets, but this decision is not in the best interest of our community. As a concerned citizen who navigates these roads daily, I believe this project will not only disrupt the lives of residents but also waste valuable resources that could be better spent elsewhere.

Currently, the intersection of Rainier and Maria Streets functions adequately with existing traffic controls. The proposed roundabout is projected to cost millions of dollars, funds that could be allocated towards more pressing needs such as improving our schools, enhancing public safety, or repairing existing infrastructure.

In numerous studies, such as the one published by the Federal Highway Administration, roundabouts have not proven to guarantee significant improvements in traffic flow or safety outcomes compared to other measures like traffic lights. A comprehensive study conducted by Pew Research additionally highlights that citizens often prioritize investment in public transportation and road maintenance over new projects like roundabouts.

Moreover, the incessant construction will likely cause major disruptions for residents and businesses in the area, potentially impacting local shops negatively by deterring customers due to construction-related traffic hindrances. Additionally, the maintenance costs post-construction will add an ongoing financial burden.

We must urge our city officials to reconsider this decision and to engage with the community to seek alternative solutions that are both economically sensible and civically inclusive.

Please join me in signing this petition to stop the unnecessary construction of a roundabout at Rainier and Maria Streets, and to ensure that our taxpayer dollars are spent wisely and effectively for the benefit of our entire community.
