The Issue

I am a resident of District 3, specifically the Woods-Sugarberry Neighborhood, in Dallas. We, members of this tightly-knit community, are voicing our concern and strong opposition to the proposed low-income apartments at 7100 W. Wheatland Road (across from Walmart). This district already houses 27 such projects built using a 9% tax credit, and we believe that it begins to overshadow the original vision for our community.

Our neighborhood, a master-planned community, was conceptualized as a zone for single-family homes with specific spots dedicated for retail development. By welcoming more retail operations, we can augment local employment opportunities and diversify the local economy, as the land has already been zoned for such use. Doubling down on single-family housing also allows us to encourage wealth-building among our residents, a factor that we hold dear in our community.

Hosting excessive low-income housing projects not only drifts away from our community's original vision but also risks our existing residents' standard of living. Adding yet another project of this nature - at the cost of sacrificing spaces for retail operations - merely isn't viable in the long run.

Therefore, we respectfully urge city officials and builders alike to honor the district's initial plan and to prioritize the proposed retail spaces and single-family residential units over the additional low-income apartments. It's time for our community's voice to be heard and respected. Please sign this petition if you wish to back our cause and help us preserve our neighborhood's vision.

A development named The James at Wheatland is in progress at 7100 West Wheatland Road, Dallas, TX 75249. This project is a 90-unit mixed-income multifamily complex currently under application for 9% Housing Tax Credits.
