For years, my hometown has been a sanctuary—our little corner of the world where we could escape the hustle and bustle of the city and live harmoniously with nature. A few weeks ago, a proposal to construct a massive data center in the heart of our community threatened to change all that. The peaceful ambiance, clean air, and the sound of birds chirping are now at risk of being replaced by noise pollution, significant increases in traffic, and environmental degradation. This is not the future we envisioned for our home, and it's why I am compelled to speak out against this development.

Data centers require enormous amounts of energy, water, and land. They are typically situated where power is cheap and regulations are weak. Here in our community, we treasure our natural resources and have worked tirelessly to maintain high environmental standards—a fact that seems overlooked by developers chasing profit margins.

A study by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory showed that data centers consume approximately 10% of the world's electricity supply, accounting for billions of tons of carbon emissions each year. In California alone, data centers are responsible for nearly 4 million metric tons of carbon dioxide annually. Importing those harmful emissions and waste into our community contradicts our values and threatens the future of our children.

We understand that technological infrastructure is vital for progress. However, it must not come at the cost of our environment and quality of life. There are alternative locations better suited for these developments, with less impact on local ecosystems and greater access to renewable energy sources. These options should be explored and prioritized.

Instead of rushing into a potentially irreversible decision, we propose a thorough environmental impact assessment, with public consultations that include all stakeholders. City planners must engage community members to understand our concerns and incorporate them meaningfully into any decision-making processes.
