They want to build the ai data centre  
in rural WA near Broome in 2032 to “Plans are underway to build the nation's biggest data centre in Western Australia's remote far north to support large-scale artificial intelligence (AI) training, including systems like ChatGPT.“ 

I am writing this as a passionate resident of a small rural town in Western Australia. Our area is not just a piece of land; it is home to vibrant ecosystems, diverse wildlife, and communities that have thrived for generations. Our environment is precious, with its natural beauty and resources, especially our freshwater, which is essential for native animals like bees that play a critical role in pollination and food production.

The proposal to build AI data centers in our town alarms me. The construction and operation of these facilities require millions of liters of water, which could severely impact our drinking water supply. Furthermore, the environmental footprint is worrisome, as these centers produce significant heat and require substantial energy to operate. The potential consequences are severe: from depleting our water resources to disrupting local wildlife habitats.

Data centers are known to consume vast amounts of electricity, adding to the carbon footprint and raising questions about sustainability. Their presence could transform the quaint character of our town into an industrial hub, overshadowing the natural charm and tranquility that we cherish.

What’s even more distressing is the lack of clear plans to mitigate these environmental impacts. We need solutions that do not put our natural resources at risk. There are alternative approaches, such as utilizing renewable energy and innovative cooling systems, which can significantly reduce water and energy consumption.

I urge local authorities, policymakers, and businesses to reconsider these plans. Our community deserves a voice in decisions that affect our land and lives. We need to ensure that any technological advancements coexist harmoniously with our environment and do not compromise its sustainability.
