The Issue

It is a painful reality that our community has been continuously exploited by the city that is supposed to protect us. After ignoring our vote against the light rail, we are left to deal with the repercussions of their decision. A horrible transition of our neighborhoods, the crime and violence has more than skyrocketed in the past few years.

The city is steadily pushing the homeless away from downtown and to our intersection of Main & Alma School as they remodel and invest in the thriving downtown area.

Our local grocery stores are forced to close at 10pm and function with one door, only leaving a crime-riddled unsafe convenience store open 24 hours. Mesa PD has confirmed this is now the worst intersection in Mesa. It was not always this way, we used to feel safe walking to the store, NOT ANYMORE!

And now, adding more fuel to the fire, the city is allowing a homeless shelter to be built on the worst intersection of Mesa. Not just any homeless shelter but a permanent housing to the most difficult to house.

We see how the city lavishes its attention on downtown, but when it comes to us, the taxpaying homeowners, all we get are problems. This is not about rejecting the homeless; it is about the city not doing their part in creating a safe environment for EVERYONE. We just want what every community deserves: ability to walk our streets in peace, safety for our elderly, and respect for our youth's at parks and playgrounds as well as our property values to not be DRASTICALLY ruined.

PSH sneaks into neighborhoods under the guise of #GODSPLAN making people believe it is a church or community center, but actually it is a permanent housing complex for the worst and most difficult to house. PSH has a proven track record of ruining the neighborhoods they are built in and we don't want to be another statistic. It's time the city found a better plan to support those who are homeless without jeopardizing the safety of existing community residents.

The neighborhoods other PSH housing is in has tumbled and the home owners are furious. Constant camping in front of their houses and the streets while they wait for housing for days weeks or months. The facility cannot tell them to move because they are a shelter, the homeowners have to raise hell to the city and then they move along and come back. The trash is one of the homeowners biggest complaints.

Our community's safety is not a bargaining chip! Reject the construction of a PSH Homeless shelter in our neighborhood. Stand with us and ensure the secure future we all deserve. Don't let our neighborhood be next on PSH's track record. Sign the petition today.

Thank you for reaching out and for sharing your concerns regarding the proposed development near Dobson and Main. I understand and appreciate your passion for your neighborhood and your desire to stay informed about projects that may impact your community. It is my understanding that La Mesa Ministries, in partnership with Eden Village, is developing a community of 21 tiny homes to provide permanent supportive housing for unsheltered individuals with disabilities. The community will include onsite management and wraparound services such as mental and physical health care, educational classes, and social events. This development is not a homeless shelter, it's a rental community. All residents must have a source of income and will pay rent, just like in any other rental housing environment. A key to the success of Eden Village will be engagement from the surrounding neighborhood. To that end, amenities like a clubhouse, gathering spaces, and a community garden are being developed to encourage collaboration between residents and neighbors. The existing building on-site will be transformed into a store offering dry goods for residents to purchase. You can learn more about the project by visiting https://lamesaministries.org/edenvillageaz/. Rick McClellan, Executive Director of La Mesa Ministries, would be happy to speak with you further if you’re interested. He also invites you to a Neighborhood BBQ Open House on May 8th from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., which will be a great opportunity to ask questions and get to know more about the vision for Eden Village. Again, thank you for your engagement. We value input from residents like yourself and are committed to working together to keep west Mesa a safe, welcoming, and vibrant place for all.
