Stop the construction of a data center in our neighborhood

Stop the construction of a data center in our neighborhood
The Issue
Our small and vibrant community is facing the threat of an unwanted and intrusive development: the construction of a massive data center. As residents and stakeholders in this neighborhood, we believe we have the right to participate in decisions that affect our lives and surroundings. This project was pushed forward without a transparent consultation process, leaving many of us feeling excluded and voiceless.
The proposed data center is not a light undertaking. Data centers not only require significant amounts of space but also consume a tremendous amount of energy—contributing massively to carbon footprints. Studies show that an average data center can use as much electricity as a small town. Moreover, the construction of such a facility typically involves large-scale landscaping changes that could disrupt local wildlife and natural habitats. Air conditioning units and generators likely needed for a data center contribute to noise pollution, further degrading the quality of life for local residents.
In addition to environmental concerns, we worry about the potential health impacts associated with the electromagnetic emissions from the technology essential to data centers. Ongoing research suggests these emissions may have adverse effects, and while the data is still being debated, it presents a risk many in our community are not willing to take.
Our neighborhood, known for its close-knit community and charming character, risks losing its identity with the arrival of such an industrial facility. Property values may be affected, and the sense of community we cherish could be eroded as more industrial developments are incentivized.
It is our firm belief that such a project should undergo a rigorous public review process, allowing residents a chance to voice their opinions and concerns. We propose that local governing bodies delay the construction of the data center until a comprehensive impact assessment is carried out and the community has had a chance to vote.
We urge local officials, environmental regulatory agencies, and community leaders to halt the development of this data center. We deserve a say in the future of our neighborhood, and this decision is too significant to be made without our involvement. Please join us in protecting our community’s integrity and environment by signing this petition.
