Stop the Construction of a Cell Tower in Our Community’s Natural Sanctuary in Fishers

Stop the Construction of a Cell Tower in Our Community’s Natural Sanctuary in Fishers

I am reaching out to you today with a heartfelt concern regarding the proposed construction of a cell tower in our beloved community area. This beautiful sanctuary, which is nestled in the midst of suburbia and on Riverside Junior High property, offers a much-needed escape into nature.
It is a cherished spot where residents come together to hike, walk, run, and relish the natural beauty, away from the hustle and bustle of urban life in Fishers. This area is not just a piece of land; it is where memories are made and cherished and I watch my grandchildren run.
It lies on Riverside School and in proximity to the Nonie Krauss Preserve to the north. And is adjacent to two essential Fishers Parks: the newly opened White River Park, featuring a kayak landing and board walk; and Heritage Park, with its remarkable paved pathways and the new pedestrian bridge extending the 106 Trail into Carmel.
Moreover, this wildlife corridor is home to early spring ephemerals, vibrant summer pollinators, and migrating birds…creating a haven for nature lovers and enthusiasts alike.
In addition this property is an excellent teaching ground for students (as you can see by their STEM displays and videos as you walk) located near the proposed tower. And look for the remnants of Scout projects throughout the property, like bat houses, bird houses and a once seating area by the River.
The natural area serves as home to two mated Eagles who live nearby, hunt and fly the river and its adjacent properties and neighborhoods.
The area surrounding this natural treasure is home to over 1,000 Fishers households, many of whom cherish their proximity to such precious green space. I myself moved here twice for the area’s tranquility, walkability, kayaking and country like setting in a busy city.
However, this peaceful refuge is under threat. The proposed cell tower, with its massive structure and foot print, is planned to be erected near our treasured sports facilities, including the tennis courts, cross country course and track/football field at this junior high school. And not far from the walkway trail down to the river.
The placement of such a structure not only compromises the natural beauty but poses potential health and environmental risks to our community, our kids, and wildlife. The presence of a cell tower could significantly alter the ecosystem, especially in a riparian zone which is crucial for our local wildlife, insects and bees affecting their migratory patterns and habitats.
Additionally, the visual impact on the landscape and from the river would diminish the natural aesthetics, rendering it less appealing for recreation, kayaking, fishing and relaxation. And a proven threat to the resale of our properties.
We understand the need for improved connectivity; however, there are alternative solutions that do not infringe upon our community's prized natural resources.
We can explore the possibilities of utilizing existing infrastructure (like the tower across the river on Hazel Dell, Martin Marietta Gravel and Sand property), or possibly a tower added to Carmel’s shooting range… or consider less intrusive technologies that meet our needs without sacrificing the environmental integrity of the area.
We strongly urge local authorities and decision-makers to reconsider the location of this cell tower and seek alternative solutions that do not compromise our community's values, natural resources, recreation, and wellbeing in SW Fishers.
Your support is crucial in preserving this vital area of Fishers for current and future generations. Just like the historic Eller family would want.
Please join us in protecting our community's natural sanctuary by signing this petition by 1/19. Together, we can make a difference and ensure the preservation of our cherished environment.
