Stop the Construction of a Carwash Next to Wamesit Lanes

Stop the Construction of a Carwash Next to Wamesit Lanes
The Issue
We, the undersigned, are writing to express our strong opposition to the proposed construction of a carwash facility at 402 Main Street, Tewksbury MA (Tewksbury Florist), which is immediately adjacent to the dining patio of Wamesit Lanes. As concerned patrons, residents, and business owners in the community, we believe this development would have several detrimental effects on the local environment, public health, and the overall dining experience at Wamesit Lanes.
The reasons for our opposition include:
Noise Pollution: The operation of a carwash involves high-pressure water jets, vacuum cleaners, and other machinery that generate significant noise. This constant noise will disrupt the serene and enjoyable atmosphere of the Firewater Tavern patio, making it difficult for diners to enjoy their meals and for the restaurant to maintain its reputation for a pleasant dining experience.
Air Quality and Health Concerns: Carwashes often use various chemicals and cleaning agents that can become airborne. The proximity of these substances to a dining area raises serious health concerns for both patrons and staff. Additionally, the exhaust fumes from cars idling and being washed could further degrade air quality, posing respiratory risks.
Traffic and Safety Issues: Increased traffic flow from cars entering and exiting the carwash could lead to congestion in the area, making it more difficult and dangerous for pedestrians and diners. This is particularly concerning for families with children and elderly patrons who frequent Wamesit Lanes.
Negative Impact on Local Businesses: The presence of a carwash next to a dining establishment may deter customers who seek a quiet and relaxing environment. This could lead to a decline in patronage not only for Wamesit Lanes but also for other nearby businesses, ultimately harming the local economy.
Aesthetic Degradation: The visual and auditory intrusion of a carwash is incompatible with the aesthetic qualities of a dining patio. The noise, the sight of cars being washed, and the overall industrial nature of the carwash would detract from the ambiance that Wamesit Lanes strives to provide.
Violation of Massachusetts Anti-Idling Law: The Massachusetts anti-idling law (M.G.L. Chapter 90, Section 16A) prohibits vehicle idling for more than five minutes, with certain exceptions. The operation of a carwash typically involves periods of idling as vehicles wait for service, which could lead to frequent violations of this law. The enforcement of this regulation would be challenging and would likely result in increased emissions and air pollution, contrary to state environmental policies and public health interests.
Existing Car Wash Across the Street: The presence of two carwashes within such close vicinity will lead to market oversaturation. The existing carwash at Petroil already adequately serves the community’s needs. The introduction of a competing carwash directly across the street could significantly harm the existing carwash business.
Given these significant concerns, we urge the planning board to reconsider the approval of this project. We believe that the construction of a carwash in this location is not in the best interest of our community, and we respectfully request that the application be denied.
We trust that the planning board will take our objections into serious consideration and prioritize the health, safety, and well-being of our community and local businesses.
Thank you for your attention to this important matter.
Sincerely,
