Stop the Construction of a 90 Unit Major Housing Complex in Kirkop PA/05460/20

The Issue

Kirkop, a small village in the south of Malta, renowned for its cultural heritage and community spirit, is facing the threat of overdevelopment. The construction of this huge social housing estate is a threat to various aspects of the village.

1. Green areas and overdevelopment in Kirkop.

Kirkop already has a problem with green areas. The village does have a number of on its outskirts fields, however it significantly lacks green areas in the residential areas. The area on which this housing estate is to be built on is one of the last green areas left in this residential area.

2. The parking problem

Residents in the mentioned area of Kirkop have already been struggling with parking just with the current dwellings. With this new 90 unit housing complex, the situation is only going to get worse. The complex is to include 76 garages and 8 car spaces at basement levels, however this is not enough and is definitely going to make the parking situation a lot worse, considering 1 unit may not house just 1 driving adult and that 1 driving adult may not only drive 1 vehicle.

3. Land value and disproportionate social housing estates in Kirkop

Overdevelopment and any disproportionate buildings are known to cause a decrease in land value. As mentioned before, Kirkop is facing the threat of overdevelopment. This housing complex is very disproportionate compared to:

a) The number of existing social housing estates in Kirkop.

Just this year, another 2 separate social housing estates were opened in Kirkop.

b) The small size of the village.
