Stop the commercial chicken factory on Etherton Road
The Issue
Etherton Road has been our sanctuary for over 15 years. Surrounded by the Shawnee Forest, our home has offered us the tranquility and freedom that only the countryside can provide. We've built our lives here, surrounded by nature, where the air is clean and the woods are quiet.
However, this peace is now under threat. A commercial chicken factory is set to be built right in the middle of our residential area, without considering our concerns or those of our neighbors. This intrusion brings with it the industrial enormity of constant semi-truck traffic on our small, winding roads, polluted air filled with fecal particles and ammonia, and a danger to our ground water.
The environmental impact of such an operation is not just theoretical; it is well-documented. Commercial chicken farms have a notorious history of leaching harmful nitrites into groundwater, threatening our wells and drinking water. The air will be tainted with odorous emissions and potential airborne diseases, compromising our quality of life and our health.
This is not just about the fear of the unknown. There are well documented cases and first hand accounts all over the country where nitrate groundwater contamination, primarily attributed to large-scale poultry farms, led to significant health issues and ruined ecosystems. This is supported by research from the Environmental Protection Agency that highlights the risk of groundwater pollution from these operations.
We acknowledge the importance of agriculture and the role it plays in the economy, but it should not come at the expense of our health and our local environment.
