Stop the Columbia Dam Project in Tennessee

The Issue

Growing up on the welcoming banks of the winding Duck River, my fiancé and I forged countless memories that have now crossed over to a new generation with our child, whom we affectionately call our 'river baby.' The gentle murmur of the waters and the vibrant biodiversity provided us with a sanctuary, an irreplaceable piece of our hearts that we now fear could be lost if the Columbia Dam is built.

The proposed Columbia Dam project along the Duck River in Columbia, TN, threatens to alter the landscape and ecosystem in ways that may be irreversible. This mighty river is not only a source of cherished memories, but also a vital artery of life for countless plant and animal species. The Duck River is renowned for being one of the most biologically diverse rivers in North America, home to over 150 species of fish and about 50 species of mussels. Building the dam could jeopardize these species, disrupting their habitats and leading to a decline that might be impossible to recover from.

Moreover, the construction of the dam could have dire consequences for our community and environment. Inundation of the river's natural course would likely lead to increased flood risks in surrounding areas, potentially damaging homes, businesses, and agricultural land. It could also diminish the water quality, affecting not only the residents of Columbia but wildlife that depend on this essential resource.

There are feasible alternatives to this project that could meet any water management needs without causing such a large-scale environmental impact. Implementing more sustainable water management practices, enhancing existing infrastructure, and investing in community-supported conservation programs could support our needs without sacrificing the natural beauty and ecological richness of Duck River.

We need to act swiftly and decisively to protect our environment and heritage. Please join us in urging local government officials, environmental agencies, and stakeholders to reconsider the Columbia Dam project. By signing this petition, you're lending a voice to conservation, sustainability, and the preservation of one of Tennessee's natural jewels for future generations to enjoy. Help us safeguard our homes, our river, and the vibrant life it supports by opposing the Columbia Dam project.
