The travesty of adversity scoring is being reported more and more in mainstream media and in professional education journals as well. Education Week just published a report entitled “Counselors Blast College Board’s Plan to Assign Students a ‘Disadvantage’ Score.” The article presents various views on both sides. To read the full article, you need to create a free account with Education Week. Of course, you can also pay for premium subscription if you choose to do so.
As the article mentioned, some wealthy parents might try to game the system by buying real estate in certain zip codes to boost their children’s adversity scores. How about getting a divorce so that their children can claim to be in a single-parent household to further boost their adversity scores? Better yet, how about enrolling their children in non-academically challenging high schools that have few college placements and offer few if any AP courses? With grade inflation in those types of schools, getting straight A’s is not that hard. Now there is the additional “benefit” of boosting their adversity scores.
Food for thought.
Have a wonderful day, and spread the petition around. We hope to reach 10,000 signatures soon!
