It’s been less than two days since I posted this petition (after 9pm EDT on Sunday), and I have received over 3100 signatures! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
Public opinion in the mainstream media has been overwhelmingly against adversity scoring. Even among those who think that colleges should consider various non-academic factors in the admissions process, many are against this type of numerical scoring.
We have no idea how the geniuses at the College Board came up with this idea, but they might have borrowed a page from Mao’s Cultural Revolution in China. Until 1976, children of workers, peasants and soldiers were preferred for college admissions over children of capitalists, landowners and intellectuals. It set back China’s education for decades. In 1977 they restored merit-based college entrance examination. Needless to say how much the world has changed in the last four decades. A lesson in history.
Let’s keep up the good work and spread the petition around!
