The Issue

Hwange is not just a park to me—it’s home. I work here and every day I walk the same land that lions roam, that elephants follow with age-old memory and where wild dogs raise their pups hidden in the bush. It’s more than a job. It’s a purpose. And that’s why hearing about mining projects like the one proposed in Sinamatella hits deeper than just policy or politics.

Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe with its awe-inspiring landscapes and incredible biodiversity is under threat. The proposed coal mining project in the region of Sinamatella poses not only a direct risk to the treasured flora and fauna but jeopardizes the very essence of what makes this park a global treasure. As one of Africa’s last great wildernesses, Hwange is home to over 100 mammal species, including critically endangered African wild dogs and a significant population of elephants.

Coal mining in such a sensitive ecosystem will disrupt wildlife habitats, lead to severe soil erosion, contaminate water sources and increase human-wildlife conflict. Already suffering from the impacts of climate change, the park's delicate balance cannot endure additional man-made pressures.
These operations, driven by short-term economic gains, overlook the long-standing and potentially irreversible damage to this precious environment. Moreover, Hwange is a critical component of the tourism industry in Zimbabwe, attracting thousands of visitors annually who contribute significantly to the local economy and conservation efforts.

We urge the stakeholders and decision-makers to reconsider and halt this coal mining project. Instead, we propose further investment in sustainable energy solutions and ecological tourism initiatives that protect our environment while promoting economic development.

Join me in standing against this mining project to preserve Hwange National Park's integrity for generations to come. Your signature can make a difference in safeguarding the future of this magnificent landscape. Please sign this petition to stop the coal mining project in Hwange National Park.
