STOP THE CLOSURE OF WOLFORD ELEMENTARY

STOP THE CLOSURE OF WOLFORD ELEMENTARY
The Issue
We, the undersigned parents, community members, and stakeholders of McKinney ISD, strongly oppose the decision made on November 5th to close Wolford Elementary, one of the highest-performing and most beloved schools in the district.
Wolford Elementary is an A-rated, top-recognized campus that has received hundreds of thousands of dollars in recent investment to support academic excellence, student growth, and evolving district needs.
It is also one of only three elementary campuses housing DSSC (Developmental Social Skills Class) programs, meaning its closure disproportionately impacts some of MISD’s most vulnerable students.
This decision defies logic and responsible planning:
- MISD is choosing to close schools that are within 2 miles of each other therefore displacing 800+ kids in one small community.
- Families will be forced into longer commute times despite safer, closer, and higher-performing campuses being available.
- The district is redistributing students inefficiently, disregarding proximity, safety, and practical neighborhood alignment.
This closure was made without essential due diligence:
- No traffic study was conducted, despite major concerns about congestion, road safety, and increased transportation distances.
Boundary criteria and demographic data were applied inconsistently, resulting in a recommendation that contradicts the district’s own stated matrix. - The justification that Wolford is “near the district boundary” is neither accurate nor aligned with district precedent, and it does not justify closing a high-performing, well-utilized school.
This decision will cause real harm:
- Students with DSSC needs will be displaced or placed into already crowded campuses.
- Teachers, staff, and families face disruption with no meaningful transition plan.
- A thriving, high-achieving school community is being dismantled without compelling justification.
We call on McKinney ISD to immediately:
- Reverse the decision to close Wolford Elementary, or halt the closure until proper analysis is completed.
- Conduct a full traffic and safety study and release the findings publicly.
- Reevaluate boundary and demographic criteria with community oversight.
- Prioritize neighborhood schools and minimize unnecessary travel for young children.
- Protect DSSC programs and ensure equitable, nondiscriminatory treatment for students with special needs.
Call to Action
- File a grievance with McKinney ISD to formally challenge this decision.
Our children deserve better. Our community deserves responsible, data-driven, child-centered leadership.
We urge MISD to do the right thing: Keep Wolford Elementary open.
