Stop the closure of Showcase Cinema De Lux !
The Issue
Showcase has just announced that it is closing Cinema De Lux in Cabot Circus, Bristol as it cannot afford the new sky-high rent demanded by the landlord. Cabot Circus is owned by AXA - a multinational company with a revenue of billions - and Hammerson - a company listed as one of the biggest 250 on the London Stock Exchange with a revenue of hundreds of millions. They are shooting themselves in the foot by denying their customer access to a great cinema, which will take business away from other stores in the shopping centre.
Cinema de Lux is a much-loved multiplex with a diverse program of films, including classics. At a time when cinema is facing deep difficulties, it is one of the highest performing cinemas in the country, and yet still cannot afford the proposed rent. Price-gouging corporate greed will close our community’s cherished cinema and take away business from the other stores in the shopping centre.
This campaign is calling for the landlord of Cabot Circus - AXA and Hammerson a.k.a the Bristol Alliance - to bring a more reasonable offer of rent to the table, an amount that allows the cinema to survive and entertain Bristolians as it has been doing since Cabot Circus was first established.
