The Issue

In the heart of Seattle lies Roosevelt High School, a place that has nurtured our passion for engineering. The next generation have been fostered by dedicated teachers and a strong engineering program. However, this invaluable program is now under threat due to budget cuts by Seattle Public Schools (SPS), which plans to shut down our engineering department.

The engineering program at Roosevelt has not only been a beacon for students like me, who thrive on hands-on learning experiences, but has also contributed to the greater community by preparing future innovators and problem-solvers. Shutting down this program will deprive students of the opportunity to explore STEM fields—a critical area for our future workforce.

Across the nation, STEM education is emphasized as a priority for future success. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics has projected that STEM jobs will grow by 8.8% from 2018 to 2028, more than non-STEM jobs. Closing the engineering program contradicts the city’s commitment to nurturing technological advancements and deprives students of competitive employment opportunities.

Furthermore, engineering at Roosevelt has consistently produced successful graduates, many of whom have gone on to prestigious universities and fulfilling careers. Cutting this program disregards the success stories and the potential of hundreds of current and future students.

We understand the challenges of budget constraints, but there are alternative solutions that could preserve this vital program while addressing financial concerns. Options such as seeking additional funding from local businesses invested in the tech industry or implementing a modified curriculum with reduced costs could be explored.

By signing this petition, you support the continuation of the Roosevelt High School engineering program. Together, we can urge SPS to find solutions that prioritize students' educational needs. It is crucial that we keep this opportunity alive for future generations of creators and builders.

Please sign and help us save the future of engineering education at Roosevelt High School.
