The Issue

I am deeply concerned about the potential closure of Matias De Llano Elementary School, a cornerstone of our community. This closure is not just about a building; it will disrupt the lives of students who consider this school a second home. The decision to consolidate schools and displace current students could have several negative consequences for families and the wider community.

Firstly, moving students to other schools may lead to overcrowded classrooms, stretching the already limited resources and attention our children receive. Current students at Matias De Llano will face significant travel challenges, longer commutes, and increased transportation costs that many families might struggle to afford. Such changes can contribute to lower attendance rates, affecting the quality of education our children receive.

Additionally, there's a tradition for seniors who haven't graduated yet from high school to return to their elementary school to do the honored walk. It's a rite of passage that means a lot to the students and their families. Without Matias De Llano Elementary, they won’t have a place to return to, depriving them of this cherished milestone.

We must also consider the emotional impact on students who will lose the environment they've grown to love and learn in. Studies show that school closures can lead to a decline in student performance due to the emotional and social disruptions they face.

We urge the school district and educational authorities to reconsider this decision. There are other ways to manage budget constraints without sacrificing the quality of our children's education and the traditions that are so important to us.

Please stand with us in sending a strong signal to decision-makers that the Matias De Llano Elementary School must remain open. Sign this petition to keep our school alive and thriving for current and future students. Your support can make a significant difference.
