Stop the Closure of Hobart’s Metro Shop: Keep Our Commuters Safe and Supported!

The issue

The Rockliff Liberal Government—specifically Treasurer Eric Abetz and Transport Minister Kerry Vincent—alongside Metro Tasmania management, are planning to permanently close the Elizabeth Street Metro shopfront in Hobart and force dedicated customer service staff into redundancy.
This short-sighted, dollar-driven cut removes the vital human face of our public transport system. For many vulnerable commuters, elderly passengers, and school children, this shopfront is the only place to get direct transit help, top up Greencards, and report immediate travel issues.
Why Safety is at Risk
We cannot afford to abandon face-to-face community infrastructure while anti-social behaviour on our network escalates. Metro’s own data has shown a massive 400% surge in anti-social incidents since 2019.
• Glenorchy Bus Mall and Rosny Bus Mall have become hotspots for targeted youth violence, frightening brawls, and threats to both commuters and drivers.
• Instead of funding transit officers or restoring the Safer Public Transport Working Group, the government is completely abandoning the public.
• Removing frontline shop staff further strips away oversight, safety resources, and security accountability in the heart of Hobart.

OUR DEMAND
We demand that Treasurer Eric Abetz, Transport Minister Kerry Vincent, and Metro Tasmania management immediately halt the proposed restructure.
1. Stop all forced redundancies of frontline customer service staff.
2. Keep the Elizabeth Street Metro shopfront fully operational.
3. Shift focus to safety by reinstating the Safer Public Transport Working Group and deploying physical Transit Officers to protect commuters at the Glenorchy and Rosny hubs.

4. A 12-Month "Digital Transition" Hub.

Retain the current staff to actively transition and educate the public. The Hobart shop can feature digital kiosks where staff physically teach elderly and vulnerable passengers how to use the new app, website, and Greencard system. This mitigates the "digital divide" shock and ensures a successful rollout.
Public transport is an essential service, not a luxury, not a business to be gutted. Sign this petition to save Tasmanian jobs and keep our bus network safe!
