The Issue

Stellenbosch, a charming town beloved for its unique local culture and vibrant community "vibe," now faces a threat that could drastically alter its character. As a resident and someone who cherishes the affordable and prime locations of Bramptons wine bar, Rome in a Bite, Aries, and Amber, I am deeply disturbed by the possibility of their closure. The reason? The owner of the block where these establishments are located intends to transform the area into a high-end tourist hotspot. This move would edge out beloved local hangouts in favor of overpriced, impersonal restaurants and rob our community of its soul.

For years, these establishments have served not only as businesses but as community hubs where friendships are forged and memories are made. Their unique charm and affordability ensure they remain accessible to everyone, fostering a diverse community spirit that is a hallmark of Stellenbosch life. Replacing them with more expensive alternatives will not only exclude a large portion of the community but will also diminish the authentic experiences that both locals and tourists seek when they visit.

We must take a stand against this forced change that prioritizes profit over people. We need to preserve the local culture and maintain the accessible, vibrant, and welcoming nature of Stellenbosch that we all hold dear. The economic development offered by tourism should not come at the cost of erasing the very character that attracts visitors in the first place.

Here's what we propose:
1. Encourage the block owner to engage in a dialogue with residents and business owners to find mutually beneficial solutions that do not alienate the local community.
2. Explore alternative development strategies that integrate new opportunities without sacrificing existing beloved institutions.
3. Empower local authorities to intervene and make planning decisions that support both economic growth and community interests.

Let us protect Stellenbosch's identity and ensure Bramptons, Rome in a Bite, Aries, and Amber can continue to contribute to the rich cultural tapestry of our town. We urge the local government and the owner of the block to listen to the voices of the community and prioritize sustainable development that respects the town's unique character.

Please sign this petition to support the preservation of Stellenbosch's dynamic and inclusive local culture. Together, we can make a difference.
