Stop The Closing Of Soul Kitchen

Stop The Closing Of Soul Kitchen
The Issue
I've been volunteering at Soul Kitchen at the Govans Presbyterian Church for three years. During my time there, I've witnessed firsthand the tremendous impact this soup kitchen has had on the community. It's not just about feeding those in need; it's about building connections and fostering a sense of belonging and support among those who might feel isolated or forgotten.
Unfortunately, plans are underway to close this vital community hub. This decision could strip countless individuals of an essential service that provides not only hot meals but also warmth, friendship, and hope. In Baltimore, where Govans Presbyterian Church is located, the rate of food insecurity is staggering. According to Feeding America, about 1 in 9 people in Maryland struggle with hunger, with an acute impact on the vulnerable populations Soul Kitchen serves.
The closure of Soul Kitchen would mean that many in our community might lose their only reliable source of a nutritious meal, their sense of community, and their opportunity to uplift their spirits through social interaction. The individuals we serve are often marginalized and face numerous challenges daily, including low income, unemployment, or homelessness. For them, Soul Kitchen isn’t merely a soup kitchen—it's a refuge. Soul Kitchen doesn't just help those in deep need, it also supports local families, seniors, veterans, and others who are affected by economic hardships. By maintaining our operations, we can continue to address these pressing needs and contribute to a more nourishing and inclusive community environment.
I am calling on all of you to help us prevent this closure and protect Soul Kitchen's invaluable contribution to our community. Soul Kitchen is scheduled to be terminated December 31st, but I refuse to let it end without even trying. So I implore all of you, if you believe in the mission and impact of Soul Kitchen; if you believe in the good it does and the lives it changes, please sign this petition.
