The Issue

Our utility bills are unbelievably high. Centerpoint's loophole enabling price gouging seems to be service & delivery charges! They keep the actual gas & electric charge per unit within the max allowed state guidelines. However their service & delivery charges are 2 & 3 times the cost of the gas. It is not unusual to see a bill with a gas charge of $40 but the service and delivery charges for that to be $120-$150 or more! They are a Texas based company and our only available supplier of life saving gas & electric. Everybody is having to pay these inflated bills, from private citizen to small business and companies. I want to draw attention to those in our community on a fixed income. The disabled and senior citizens who are teetering on the edge of homelessness by going without food and medicines just to pay rent and keep their utilities on! It's like a sad game of survivor or squid games happening right here in Evansville and surrounding area. To be blunt; it's a damn shame for this to be allowed! Consider this: your able bodied worker can turn their thermostats down or off for about 9 hours 5 days a week. But our Senior Citizens and disabled are at home relying on utilities 24/7. So the people who can least afford these incredibly high bills are using more utilities and have less set income. The stories of these human beings in our society are similar and unfortunately common! They turn down tstat. They wear warm clothing and sock caps indoors during day and at night in bed when they sleep. They close all vents except for the one room they're in the most. They close doors and hang up shower curtains and blankets to Isolate rooms. So even if they really try and succeed at using very little utilities, the delivery and service charges raise their monthly bill to that barely able to pay level. There are no winners in this survival competition. The constant anxiety of waiting to hear their furnace kick on makes their heart jump. They remain aware of how long their system runs, worrying about the money until it shuts off and they relax their bodies and breathe easily again. This scenario plays out all day every day. I'm just one voice speaking out for others. We just need help. We're tired of surviving and just want to live. To breathe easy. We're all doing what we can and want others know of our plight. The decision makers. The political leaders. Local city council. We don't have all the answers. We do know that if we had choices for utility service or even a state run source like our provider of water, our monthly bills would be more realistic! All this may sound dramatic or made up. It's not. I am one of those disabled on a fixed income, and this is my own experience. Sadly, my story is not unique. We need to get the attention of those who can change this Texas based utility monopoly situation that has taken control of the quality of our lives. Help us get the attention we need for change!
