The Issue

In today's world of financial complexities, more than ever, we need to ensure our hard-earned money works for us and not against us. My son’s education, something I planned for diligently, started with a decision to open a Certificate of Deposit (CD) at Synchrony Bank using savings accumulated over years of hard work. I planned to use the maturity of that CD to support important educational expenses. But instead of accessing my funds as expected, I encountered a corporate policy that is financially damaging to consumers.

Weeks before the CD was supposed to mature, Synchrony Bank sent me an impersonal email with little clarity, merely stating that there was an unread notification on their website. The message was ambiguous and failed to clearly communicate the imminent auto-renewal of my CD. As a result of this opaque communication strategy, 20 days after the CD had been auto-renewed, I was shocked to find my funds locked into another term at an unfavorable interest rate. Redeeming my money now would mean incurring a heavy penalty, derailing plans for my son’s education.

This situation is not unique to me. Many consumers have shared similar experiences where banks take advantage of fine print and obscure notifications to trap customers into automatically renewing CDs. This practice disproportionately affects individuals who may not regularly access online accounts, making it difficult for them to keep track of these critical financial deadlines.

We need transparency in banking! It's time for a change in the policy around CD auto-renewals across all banks. Financial institutions should be mandated to offer a 'Do Not Auto-Renew' option for CD account holders, accessible anytime during the CD term without penalties or bureaucratic hurdles. A plain and clear communication strategy, such as direct emails indicating the nature of the message and its urgency, should be a standard practice. Additionally, account holders should be able to manage renewal options online easily and at their convenience.

Let it be clear that the petition is not ask Banks to allow penalty free early withdrawal but to provide an opition, during the entire duration of the CD, to choose not to auto-renew their CDs at maturity! These options cannot be offerred just 30days before maturity or any other such ambigious durations as people tend to miss such tiny windows. The option to auto-renew or not, should be something the investor can choose right from the day of initial deposit throughout until the day of maturity and for 10 additional grace days after maturity.

While certain banks like Synchrony tend to exploit unwary customers through such unfair practices, several other banks in the United States already provide these options and transact business in a fair manner keeping their customers' interest at the top.

By signing this petition, you are standing up for consumer rights and against exploitative banking practices. Together, we can urge legislators and consumer protection agencies to address this issue and help many more individuals secure their financial futures without unnecessary complications. Let's insist on fair banking policies that respect our choices and our financial planning. Your signature is a step towards more consumer-friendly banking. Please sign and share this petition today.
