Stop the Carmyle Greenbelt Development – Save Our Village!

The Issue

Carmyle is a close-knit community with a strong spirit - one that looks out for each other and pulls together in times of need. Now, that’s under threat.

Glasgow City Council has sold off vital greenbelt land to developers who plan to build 400 plus homes despite Carmyle already lacking the basic services and facilities that residents need.

There’s no functioning community centre, no elderly or youth services, and limited access to shared public spaces where people can meet, gather, and connect. Our GP services are stretched to the limit, and the traffic infrastructure can’t support this level of expansion.

This land isn’t just a patch of grass. It’s a home to deer, bats, badgers, owls, otters and more - and an escape for people in the community. Once it’s gone, it’s gone forever.

IMPORTANT UPDATE: ANOTHER DEVELOPER HAS NOW APPLIED TO BUILD 49 MORE HOMES

A second planning application has been submitted for 49 houses and 104 parking spaces at River Road.

Combined with the existing large-scale proposal at Kenmuir Farm/New Park, this takes the total to 449 homes - a 40% increase on the number of homes currently in Carmyle.

That means:

  • Even more pressure on already overstretched GP services
  • Severe traffic congestion on roads already struggling at peak times
  • Increased pollution and road safety issues
  • The complete loss of all major green spaces used daily by walkers, runners, cyclists, dog walkers, families and local businesses
  • Irreversible damage to wildlife habitats and biodiversity
  • A scale of development that our small village simply cannot absorb

This isn’t “growth.”
This is overdevelopment, and it will permanently change Carmyle for the worse.

Why is now the time to act?
Because once this development begins, there is no going back. The decision to sell the land has already been made, but planning and infrastructure proposals can still be challenged. We need to raise our voices before approvals are locked in. Every signature, every message, every bit of pressure now can help stop irreversible damage to Carmyle’s green spaces, services and future.

What’s even more concerning?
We've just found out our beloved Orchard Park, at the very heart of the community, has also been sold to a private developer with no consultation or communication to residents. It’s where children have grown up playing, where families gather, where we’ve all made memories, and it’s been quietly signed away.

We’re distressed, angry, and deeply disappointed. Where’s the transparency? Where’s the respect for this village and its people?

We’re not just standing by. We’re standing up.

We, the residents of Carmyle and supporters of our community, call on Glasgow City Council to:

  • Halt all plans for the 400 plus-home development
  • Respect the needs and voices of Carmyle residents
  • Protect the greenbelt, greenspaces and local wildlife
  • Invest in the community before expanding it

This development does nothing to serve the people who live here. Please add your name to stop it from going ahead and have our voices heard.

We don’t want decisions made about us - we want them made with us.
This is our village, our future, and our voices must be heard. No more deals behind closed doors. No more silence. It’s time for real transparency, real consultation, and real respect for the people who live here.
