Stop the Canadian Rise of Preferred Provider Networks (PPNs) Limiting Pharmacy Choices

The Issue

As a local pharmacist and someone who uses healthcare services, I'm worried about how insurance companies are limiting where patients can get their prescriptions filled. We need to come together to protect everyone's right to choose their pharmacy in Ontario.

For example, when Manulife started pushing people to only use certain pharmacies like Loblaws and Shopper's Drug Mart, it took away patients' ability to decide where to go. Even though there was a big outcry and they started to backtrack, we can't count on that happening every time. We need to be in control of our healthcare choices.

These insurance networks ignore what patients want by forcing them away from local pharmacies to others that the insurance companies prefer, all to make more money. This goes against the idea that healthcare should focus on what's best for patients and doesn't really help anyone.

There's a clear unfairness here: doctors, pharmacists or nurse practitioners can't tell patients which pharmacy to go to, but insurance companies can influence that decision however they want. This isn't fair to patients or pharmacies.

Eighty-six percent of Canadians believe patients should choose any licensed pharmacy, regardless of insurance. However, if we don't create a law the insurance companies can refuse to pay for your prescriptions if you use a pharmacy that they don't approve of.

Quebec's regulations set a precedent, showing the need for nationwide reform. We urge officials to:
1.       Prohibit PPN imposition.

2.       Uphold patients' right to pharmacy choice.

3.       Preserve patient-centered care.

4.       Implement Quebec-like regulations nationally.

Your signature supports patient rights and equitable healthcare access. Let's demand accountability from insurance companies.  Let's make our laws represent the will of the people.
