Stop the Canada–India immigration expansion

Stop the Canada–India immigration expansion
The Issue
The Government of Canada recently announced an expanded partnership with India that includes new “people-to-people” exchanges and talent pathways. At the same time, Canadians are being told that temporary immigration levels must be reduced because housing, infrastructure, healthcare, and public services are already under significant strain.
This contradiction is why many Canadians across both political spectrums are concerned. Canada’s population has grown faster in recent years than our housing supply, healthcare capacity, and infrastructure can realistically support. Young Canadians in particular are facing record housing costs, rising youth unemployment, and longer healthcare wait times.
Canada has always taken pride in being a multicultural country. Multiculturalism means welcoming people from many different cultures and regions of the world while building shared civic values. However, when immigration and international student programs become heavily concentrated from one single country, it begins to undermine the very diversity that multiculturalism is meant to represent.
According to Statistics Canada, immigrants from India have represented roughly a 40% or more of all new permanent residents in recent years, by far the largest share from any single country. In some colleges and private programs it has been over 70 percent of international students. At the same time, Canada has experienced a rapid expansion of temporary residents, including international students and temporary workers, which has placed additional pressure on housing markets and local infrastructure in many communities.
This petition is not about singling out any one group of people. It is about asking the Government of Canada to restore balance and sustainability to the immigration system. Canadians deserve policies that reflect true global diversity while also aligning immigration levels with the country’s ability to provide housing, healthcare, and opportunity for both newcomers and existing residents.
We are calling on the Government of Canada to:
• Reconsider immigration expansions tied to the recent Canada–India partnership until Canada’s housing and infrastructure capacity stabilizes.
• Ensure immigration and international student programs reflect genuine global diversity rather than heavy concentration from a single country.
• Conduct a transparent national review of temporary resident programs and their impact on housing, employment, and public services.
• Align immigration levels with Canada’s housing supply, healthcare capacity, and economic needs.
Canada’s strength has always come from balanced immigration, shared civic values, and a truly diverse multicultural society. Canadians deserve an immigration system that reflects those principles and remains sustainable for future generations.
We call on a Member of Parliament to step forward and lead a nationwide referendum so Canadians can have a direct say on the future of our immigration system. ‼️
Sign this petition if you believe Canada’s immigration policies should reflect Canadian values, balanced multiculturalism, and long-term sustainability.
