The Issue

I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the proposed 35.8% rate increase for the California FAIR Plan. This proposed hike will place a severe financial burden on thousands of California homeowners, particularly those living in high-risk areas near the Sierra National Forest.

When I purchased my home at 36111 Teaford Poyha, North Fork, CA 93643 in 2020, my FAIR Plan insurance premium was $1,500 for a 1,400 square foot home built in 1971. Each year, however, my premium increased, further straining my family’s finances. The insurance requirement of my mortgage lender meant these premium increases directly raised my monthly mortgage payment through the escrow account. This year alone, my annual premium rose by $1,500, escalating my monthly mortgage payment from $1,700 to $1,950.

Over five years, I paid roughly $90,000 to keep my home, yet only $20,000 of that went towards the principal. The rest was consumed by rising insurance and escrow costs. This unsustainable financial pressure led to the heartbreaking decision to sell my home and relocate out of state, separating me from my family, friends, and community.

My experience is not unique. Many residents in the Sierra National Forest and similar communities are facing the same difficult choices. If the proposed 35.8% premium increase is approved, even more families will struggle with housing affordability or be forced to leave California. Consequently, this would not only disrupt lives but also weaken the fabric of our local communities.

I respectfully urge you not to approve such a significant increase to the FAIR Plan premiums. The impact on working families, retirees, and longtime residents will be severe, causing unnecessary hardship and dislocation. Please consider the real stories behind these numbers and protect California homeowners from further financial distress.

Join me in urging the relevant authorities to reconsider this proposal, ensuring that California remains a place where families can thrive and feel secure. Sign this petition to voice your opposition to the proposed premium increase for the FAIR Plan.
