Stop the Building of a Supermarket on Helensburgh's Waterfront

The Issue

As resident in Helensburgh, UK, I have been deeply touched and concerned by the decision of Argyll and Bute Council to approve the construction of a supermarket on our precious waterfront. This land, which is part of Helensburgh's unique appeal, has the potential to be developed into an attraction that fuels investment into our local economy and bolsters tourism. Additionally, such a development would provide support to our local businesses and further enhance the picturesque charm of our seaside town.

However, the current plan for a supermarket and car park would drastically degrade our seafront. It would deprive us of valuable open space and potential tourist attraction point. Research has shown that open spaces, parks and waterfronts are key in attracting tourists and thus stimulate the local economy (source: 'The Impact of Urban Spaces on Economic Growth', Journal of Economic Geography).

Moreover, studies suggest that for every £1 spent in a local business, 63p stays in the local economy compared to 40p with a larger business (source: Local Multiplier 3, NEF). Therefore, it is clear that supporting our local businesses instead of multinational supermarkets will bring more direct benefits to our community.

Therefore, I call on Argyll and Bute Council to reconsider this decision, taking into account the wider impact on the community and the potential for increased tourism and local investment that an alternative development could bring.

Please, sign this petition and demand a change that preserves the charm of Helensburgh and serves the best interests of its people.
