The Issue

The Boys of Tommen series is an exceptionally complex and layered body of work that tackles heavy, serious subject matter that cannot—and should not—be treated lightly. While the idea of adapting it into a television series may sound appealing on the surface, doing so would ultimately undermine the very heart of the story.

To be adapted for television, many of the book’s mature and graphic scenes would inevitably have to be removed or significantly altered. However, these moments are not included for shock value—they are essential to the narrative, the character development, and the themes the series explores. Cutting them would fundamentally change the story and dilute its meaning, affecting the trajectory of the characters and the emotional truth the books are built on.

Not every story needs to be adapted for the screen, and Boys of Tommen is a clear example of a series that is meant to exist as literature. Its depth, internal monologues, and slow, intentional storytelling are what make it powerful. A television format—especially one attempting to compress two intricate, emotionally dense books into only eight episodes—would inevitably result in important plotlines, character arcs, and sensitive themes being neglected or mishandled.

Additionally, the book series is not even complete. Attempting an adaptation before the story has fully been told risks misrepresenting the author’s vision and prematurely locking the narrative into choices that may not align with the series’ intended conclusion.

Most importantly, Boys of Tommen has resonated deeply with readers because it sheds light on serious issues and gives a voice to people who have experienced similar struggles. Many readers feel seen, understood, and validated through this story. Altering or removing key elements for the sake of adaptation would compromise everything the series stands for and diminish its impact.

For these reasons, Boys of Tommen should remain a book series. Its story deserves to be told fully, carefully, and authentically—something that only the written format can truly provide.
