The Issue

Stop the desecration of sacred Hawaiian lands at Pohakuloa. Sacred Hawaiian land is being used for live-fire military training. At Pohakuloa on the island of Hawaii, explosives and heavy weapons are used in an area where Native Hawaiian burial sites and cultural landscapes still exist.

in this period of new lease negations to replace the existing 65 year $1.00 leases ending in 2029 we demand an end to the destruction. An end to unnecessary live munition training.

For us, Native Hawaiians, the land, aina, is our ancestor. Within it are iwi kupuna, the bones of our ancestors, meant to rest undisturbed. Every detonation risks destroying what can never be replaced. Each explosion not only damages the physical land but erases pieces of our cultural heritage, which are invaluable and irreplaceable.

The U.S. military has conducted exercises in these lands for decades, often disregarding the cultural and environmental significance of Pohakuloa. Studies show that live-fire training poses significant risks to the biodiversity of the area and increases the potential for contamination of the fragile ecosystems that many native species call home.

Furthermore, these actions violate the respect owed to native peoples and their traditions. The destruction caused at Pohakuloa underscores a broader issue: the need to respect and preserve the cultural and historical integrity of lands that are deeply woven into the identity of their indigenous peoples.

We demand an immediate cessation of all live-fire training at Pohakuloa. Let us work towards establishing a coalition with Hawaiian community leaders, environmental experts, and military officials to chart a path forward that both respects the needs of national defense and honors the sanctity of our heritage.

Join us in calling for the protection of Pohakuloa. Sign this petition to halt the destruction and work toward conserving one of Hawaii's most sacred sites. Maikaʻi ʻāina o Pohakuloa.
