Stop the Bill Limiting Reserve Police Officers' Employment Rights

The Issue

I, a dedicated public servant, served as a full-time police officer for many years and am now a reserve police officer. My concern and the worry of many others in my position revolve around two proposed bills (SB 2144 & HB 3846) that threaten our financial stability. This legislation seeks to limit the authority of reserve peace officers like us, potentially disrupting not only our careers but our lives.

One key issue embedded in this legislation is the restriction of reserve peace officers using police vehicles for private gain under Texas Transportation Code § 541.20. Understandably, regulations around use of police property need to be in place. However, the broad restrictions proposed could play into denying hardworking reserve officers a significant portion of their income without introducing any viable solutions or alternatives.

Texas law enforcement agencies have over 1,900 reserve officers who may be affected by these stipulated changes (CJISD, 2020). These officers play a critical role in maintaining peace and stability, especially at times when full-time officers cannot cover all areas.

We respectfully urge Representative John P Cyrier and other decision-makers to rethink this potentially disruptive legislation. Please consider the significant contribution of reserve police officers to our communities and protect their right to stable employment.
