PROPOSED BATTERY ENERGY STORAGE SYSTEM (BESS) Knighton on Teme & Newnham Bridge

A planning proposal for a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) on agricultural farmland in Knighton on Teme has been submitted to the Malvern Hills District Council Planning department.

The proposal is from an organisation called Integurm Renewable Energy Ltd based in London.

The scheme is for numerous large lithium battery containers, a substation of 6m in height, and a communication tower of 15m in height along with other supportive infrastructure.

All documents detailing the development can be found on the Malvern Hills Planning Portal:

https://plan.malvernhills.gov.uk/Planning/Comment/M/24/01660/FUL

ANY SUCH DEVELOPMENT WOULD BE DEVASTATING TO THE LOCAL LANDSCAPE, ENVIRONMENT AND COMMUNITY!

The local area to the proposed site is rich in history and wildlife. The northern boundary of the proposed BESS site is close to the Grade 1 Listed St Michaels and All Angels Church, and there are 13 listed places both residential and non-residential within 1km. There are also 9 Sites of Special Scientific Interest within 2km of the proposed site.

Fire Risks

There are fire risks with such sites, with a number happening globally. One occurred in Liverpool in 2020 and took 59hrs for the fire to burn itself out. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-leeds-66584335

With Tenbury Wells having a reserved Fire Service this would place significant pressure on them and deplete their ability to respond to other local emergencies.

Noise

The noise a BESS site would produce in this area would increase the noise pollution in this rural community.

KEY ISSUES:

• Risk of fire, explosion and toxic gases

• Noise pollution

• Increased light pollution

• Inadequate access to site

• Aesthetic desecration of beautiful countryside

• Impact on local wildlife habitat

• In close proximity to the Grade 1 12th Century Church and a number of listed buildings.

• Of no benefit to the local community

There is great concern within the local community, and a local group has now been formed to oppose the proposal.

This issue requires the community to come together and oppose any such proposal.

It has been brought to our attention that a graphic (photo) of a BESS facility (Battery Energy Storage System Facility) previously used in this petition "may" be subject to "Copyright law". As a group, "ActionTeme", we apologise for this. We therefore request that anyone who saw the graphic, disregard it and if anyone downloaded it, we would respectfully ask you to delete it.  The BESS graphic was also on a 'flyer', which if you are local resident, may have received. If so, then please disregard the graphic of the BESS on the flyer also.

This online petition remains relevant without the graphic.

Thank you.
