The Issue

As a resident of Cleveland, Ohio, I’m angry, I’m deeply concerned and completely disappointed about the proposed ban on soda and other sugary drinks within the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits in our state. Ohio’s Republican Governor Mike DeWine, United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Secretary Brooke Rollins have suggested restrictions that could limit access to affordable products like those produced by Pepsi, impacting countless families who rely on these affordable options.

The intention to ban sugary drinks stems from health concerns, aiming to encourage healthier choices among SNAP recipients. However, this approach is misguided. Such a ban would disproportionately impact low-income families and individuals, reducing their freedom to choose affordable options that best fit their needs and preferences. According to recent studies, the majority of SNAP recipients make responsible nutritional choices without imposed restrictions. Introducing a ban not only undermines their autonomy but could inadvertently increase food insecurity as choices become more limited.

In Ohio, we pride ourselves on upholding freedoms that allow individuals to make their own informed choices. We understand promoting healthy lifestyles is important and necessary, but this can be achieved through education and more accessible healthy alternatives rather than outright restriction. Instead, we should be investing in community-based nutrition education programs and ensuring fresh and nutritious foods are affordable and widely available.

I urge Governor DeWine, Secretary RFK Jr. and Secretary Brooke Rollins to reconsider this policy. The future of our communities depends on trust and understanding between policymakers and constituents. We have a responsibility to support, not restrict, individuals who rely on SNAP. Let's work together towards solutions that genuinely uplift and empower Ohioans without sacrificing their dignity or freedom of choice.

Join me in protecting the rights of SNAP beneficiaries in Ohio. Please sign this petition to stop the ban on soda and other certain sugary drinks within SNAP benefits on Thursday, October 1, 2026. And let me be clear. We must stand together, we can ensure a fair and inclusive approach that fosters positive change without unnecessary penalties. Sign this petition now before it’s too late!

Urge Cleveland Mayor Justin M. Bibb, U.S. Representative Greg Landsman and Democratic lawmakers to protect sugary and andartificial sweeteners soda for SNAP EBT Benefits right now! Immigrants loves sugary drinks.
