The issue

Many of us understand the critical role social media plays in our lives. For millions of Australians—including myself—it is more than just a platform; it’s a lifeline. It’s a space to connect, unwind, and find solidarity. Some believe that banning those under 16 from social media will curb online bullying. While it’s true that online bullying is a serious issue, we must carefully consider the broader implications of such a ban. What alternatives will exist for young people who rely on social media as a refuge, a support network, and a vital space for self-expression?

The Data Speaks for Itself:

81% of Australian teens say social media positively impacts their mental health, alleviating feelings of loneliness and depression (Australian Mental Health Commission, 2019).
A 2022 study by ReachOut Australia found that 76% of young people use social media to stay connected with friends, and 59% rely on it for mental health support resources.
Globally, research from UNICEF (2017) reveals that restricting social media access doesn’t eliminate bullying; instead, it often forces it offline, where interventions are less visible and harder to address.
Addressing the Real Issue:
Bullying doesn’t start or stop with social media—it’s a societal problem that needs targeted solutions, not blanket restrictions. Digital platforms are merely tools; they aren’t inherently harmful. Instead of removing access, we should focus on digital literacy education, emotional resilience training, and stronger online safety measures.

A Question of Rights:
Access to information, self-expression, and community support are fundamental human rights. Social media provides young Australians with access to peer support groups, mental health resources, and global conversations on issues they care about. Removing this access risks silencing their voices and isolating them further.

By signing this petition, we urge the Australian government to consider the long-term consequences of this proposed ban. Let’s advocate for education over restriction, empowerment over exclusion, and policies that address the root causes of online harm.

Sign this petition today and stand up for our youth—their right to connect, share, and thrive in safe digital spaces depends on it.
