Stop the ban of social media in 2026

Stop the ban of social media in 2026
The Issue
The proposed ban on social media for minors under the age of 16 in Malaysia, set to be implemented in 2026 as part of the Online Safety Act 2025, is a decision I cannot support. As a concerned citizen, I recognize the vital role social media plays in the lives of millions of young Malaysians. It is a platform for education, a means of communication, and a tool for civic engagement. Completely banning access denies them these opportunities and may inadvertently expose them to greater risks, such as the use of VPNs, account sharing, and unsafe age verification systems.
There is no question that the safety of minors online is of utmost importance. However, existing laws in Malaysia already provide measures to tackle harmful content effectively. What is needed is better enforcement of these laws, not a sweeping ban that removes access to valuable resources and connections. A balanced approach that prioritizes education on safe internet use and strengthens current regulations is far more effective in safeguarding our youth.
Consider countries where similar bans have been lifted due to their ineffectiveness in truly protecting children. These cases highlight the potential for unintended consequences, driving minors towards unregulated and potentially dangerous platforms.
I urge the government to reconsider this decision and collaborate with educators, parents, and digital platforms to create a safer online environment. Through education and improved regulation, we can protect minors without sacrificing the incredible benefits that social media provides.
By signing this petition, you are advocating for a more effective, balanced approach to online safety, one that empowers and educates our youth rather than restricting them. Please join me in calling on policymakers to stop this ban from taking effect in 2026.
