Stop the B.C. Government’s Misguided Attack on Government Civil Lawyers

Stop the B.C. Government’s Misguided Attack on Government Civil Lawyers
The Issue
HON. DAVID EBY, KC, PREMIER
HON. NIKI SHARMA, KC, ATTORNEY GENERAL
HON. BRENDA BAILEY, MINISTER OF FINANCE
Lawyers for the Province ensure that government operates in accordance with the law (section 2(b) of the Attorney General Act). In 2023, the Eby-led NDP legislated most (but not all) government lawyers into a union they did not choose.
The Province now is seeking to fundamentally change the conditions of employment for government lawyers in a way that would disadvantage junior lawyers, suppress wages, and create a toxic work environment.
At the same time the Province contracts out a significant portion of its legal work, which is much more costly than investing in its own legal professionals.
The Province's position will degrade the quality of legal services provided to government and undermine the work of employees responsible for ensuring that government operates according to the rule of law. It will impede the public's ability to access tribunals and the courts and to obtain permits and authorizations. It will slow the economy.
British Columbians reject the disrespect for the rule of law on the rise in the United States.
British Columbians expect this government to be accountable to the public and to operate according to the rule of law.
I call upon the Province to adjust its position at the bargaining table immediately.
