Stop the auction sale of Premium Plaza

Stop the auction sale of Premium Plaza
The Issue
I am a tenants' representative & a clinical psychologist, and every day I witness the profound effects anxiety and depression have on individuals and families. When our home environment becomes unstable, it doesn't just threaten our physical security; it destabilizes our mental well-being. That's why it's imperative that we address the planned auction sale of Premium Plaza Plot 2136 in the city of Ndola, Copperbelt Province, which currently houses 108 tenants across residential units and 10 shops. Our landlords, ZSIC, have made this alarming decision without considering the human consequences and the severe societal impact.
Premium Plaza is not just a building, it's a community, a home to many who have built their lives and livelihoods here in Ndola. The decision to auction this property is not just a financial transaction, but a direct threat to 108 families and 10 businesses. In our economically challenging times, eviction would exacerbate the mental health crisis, leading to increased anxiety, stress, and depression among the residents and business owners who are already struggling to cope.
The Zambia State Insurance Corporation (ZSIC) should prioritize the humane treatment of its tenants and open a dialogue with the community to explore alternative solutions. We urge ZSIC to consider options such as debt restructuring, community partnerships, and governmental support to maintain the stability of Premium Plaza and its cherished community.
Research indicates that stable housing is crucial for mental health and community cohesion. A study by the World Health Organization has shown that displacement can amplify mental health issues, leading to long-term emotional and psychological distress. Moreover, the evicted families and displaced businesses will face enormous challenges finding affordable housing and viable locations elsewhere in the city.
This auction does not only threaten current families; it threatens the very soul of the Ndola community. It is essential that we, as caring citizens, take action to stop this impending auction.
We call upon ZSIC, the local government of Ndola, and the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources to halt the auction and actively engage with the residents of Premium Plaza to find a sustainable and humane resolution.
Please join us in preserving the homes, shops, and stability of Premium Plaza Society by signing this petition. Your support can make the difference between displacement and security for hundreds of people. Together, we can show that Ndola values its community and mental well-being over profit.
