Stop the APS Sale of Historic Lakewood Heights Elementary

The Issue

Atlanta Public Schools Has Recommended Lakewood Elementary for Disposal.

Historic Lakewood Heights Elementary School:
Lakewood Elementary is located at 335 Sawtell Avenue in the Historic Lakewood Heights community. Built in 1913, the school is part of the Lakewood Heights Historic District and on the National Register of Historic Places. APS closed the school in 2004 and it has remained ignored and empty since.

Lakewood Heights Elementary School has not been altered since its construction and remains in excellent condition. Our historic neighborhood school is the only historic building left on the APS Facilities Master Plan disposal list. This means APS plans to put our historic, public good, up for sale.

APS has beautifully restored and reused its historic school buildings in other neighborhoods; it's time to work with our elected school board members and APS staff to do the same for Lakewood Heights NOW.

PLEASE SIGN TO HELP US:

  1. Stop the potential sale of our 1913 historic school building. As part of the Historic National Registry, Lakewood Heights Elementary is pivotal to preserving our historic Atlanta neighborhood. Instead of losing pieces of our history (or letting it crumble into the ground) we want APS to immediately restore and reuse this important public neighborhood asset for the community’s good.
  2. Present a working proposal for a public 0-5 early learning school. A quality open-enrollment 0-5 early learning program would benefit current families and attract new ones to Southeast Atlanta. Our historic APS school building can be the early learning catalyst for improving our neighborhood APS public K-12 schools, which deserve to succeed.
  3. Assure our taxpayers' and families' public buildings and schools improve and work for us all. When done right, our historic APS school building can and will add community value, stability, and positive growth for our neighbors and children. Like every other Beltline neighborhood, Lakewood Heights deserves to assure our APS properties serve us as working education and publicly-owned real estate investments.

When our public schools work, our neighborhoods work!
