Stop the Application for Temporary Accommodation on Harrison Street.

Stop the Application for Temporary Accommodation on Harrison Street.

The Issue

Application number: A/24/098258/CU

Location: Queens Arms 9 Harrison Street Wigan WN5 9AU

Proposal: Change of use from public house to temporary accommodation and support centre.

From: Concerned Residents of Harrison Street and the Surrounding Community.

The residents of the  surrounding area of Harrison Street, strongly oppose the proposed application for temporary accommodation in our neighborhood.

While we recognise the need for housing solutions, we believe placing such accommodation in a predominantly elderly community will have serious negative consequences, including:

  •  Increased Anxiety Among Residents
Many elderly neighbours already feel vulnerable, and this proposal will heighten their worries about personal safety and community security.
  •  Potential Increase in Crime & Anti-Social Behavior
Similar facilities in residential areas have been linked to increased crime rates, including drug-related offences, theft, and disturbances.
  •  Devaluation of Property
Homeowners have worked hard to maintain a safe and peaceful environment. The presence of a temporary accommodation facility in this location will likely decrease property values, impacting residents financially.
  •  Lack of Proper Support Services
Without dedicated support systems in place, housing individuals struggling with addiction in a residential neighbourhood may worsen the situation rather than improve it.

We urge the Council to:
 - Reconsider this proposal and explore alternative locations with better access to support services.
- Conduct a full community impact assessment before proceeding.
- Engage with residents in open, transparent discussions before making decisions affecting our community.

By signing this petition, you are supporting the strong opposition to this application and demand that this area remains a safe and secure neighbourhood for its residents.
