The Issue

As a concerned resident of Dallas, Oregon, I feel compelled to voice the frustration and apprehension shared by many in our community over the proposed construction of an apartment building at the intersection of Main and Walnut. For far too long, our voices have echoed in council chambers only to be met with indifference. Yet, the community's concerns remain clear, and it's crucial they are heard and acted upon.

Firstly, the proposed project threatens to disrupt the charm and functionality of our town. Dallas is defined by its close-knit community and unique character. Introducing a high-density apartment complex in this area could significantly alter the neighborhood's atmosphere, leading to increased traffic, noise pollution, and strain on local resources and infrastructure. Currently, the streets surrounding Main and Walnut are not equipped to handle the added pressure that such a development would inevitably bring.

Potential Problems: 1. Increased traffic at an already overpopulated traffic light. It will need to be altered,  including yellow arrows,  etc.  2. There are 84 proposed apartments with only 69 parking spots.  Parking is already overcrowded in this area. 3. We've already cleaned up the neighborhood, both sides of Walnut, from all the rifraft. "Affordable housing" opens that problem again. 4. Sewer and water concerns.  5. How will it affect property value of the surrounding neighborhood? 6. What about a school bus stop?

This is a highway, does ODOT know of the proposal, and how it will affect the highway?

Secondly, there are environmental implications that demand attention. The project's footprint could lead to the destruction of green spaces that are valuable to our community not just for their aesthetic value but for their role in local biodiversity and climate regulation. Moreover, there's a risk of altering natural drainage patterns, potentially escalating flooding risks in other parts of the town.

Potential problems: Rickreal Creek is 1. The main water to/from the reservoir.  2. It is a natural protected waterway under Oregon BLM. Also this will add a lot of trash and pollution to the creek.

There are viable alternatives to meet the housing needs within our community without resorting to such drastic measures. It is essential to explore options that align with sustainable development principles, such as utilizing vacant plots in less trafficked areas or focusing on smaller, more community-integrated housing solutions.

The decision-makers in Dallas must weigh the long-term effects of this construction on our town against the short-term gains. Our goal is to ensure that Dallas remains a vibrant and harmonious place for all residents, both current and future. By signing this petition, you join us in urging city officials to reevaluate this proposal and prioritize the well-being and voices of its residents. Together, we can preserve the essence of Dallas for generations to come.

Not only should it NOT be five stories, but it will block the beautiful tree line heading into downtown.  Dallas is all about esthetics. We do NOT need our want an apartment building there!

Please support our cause by signing this petition. Let's stand united in safeguarding the character and quality of life in our beloved town.
