Stop the Anti-Transgender Event at the University of the Pacific

The Issue

**UPDATE**

Please view the University's official statement about the TPUSA event here. The University has stated that while they will not fully cancel the event, they are "working closely with campus partners to ensure that all appropriate measures are in place to uphold our standards for respectful dialogue."

Additionally, please view this guide from The Center for the Defense of Academic Freedom about Responding to Turning Point USA (TPUSA) and Other Provocative Student Groups on Campus.

Finally, Pacific's Center for Identity and Inclusion is hosting their Annual LGBTQ+ Summit titled "There's More To Us: Centering Trans Narratives, Empowerment, & Liberation" on March 19th from 4:00pm-8:00pm in the CII Lounge (McCaffrey 1st Floor). You can RSVP to the event here. Furthermore, CII will be hosting more Town Halls to answer any remaining questions and give students, faculty, staff, and community members more opportunities to share their testimonies.

Students have been informed of a transphobic event taking place at the University of the Pacific, titled "The Truth About Transgenderism." This event is being hosted by Pacific's chapter of Turning Point USA, and will feature Pastor Jun Sun Yoo, who will “shed light on the truth about transgenderism and other LGBT-related topics.” Turning Point USA is a club founded by far-right political activist and online personality Charlie Kirk. It is scheduled to take place in the Janet Leigh Theater on March 19th at 6:30pm. Turning Point USA has adamantly opposed rights for transgender people and aims to demonize the transgender community, alongside other marginalized communities.

We want to make it clear that this transphobic extremism has no home at Pacific. Pacific prides itself on fostering an inclusive environment for all students, faculty, staff, and community members. This event does not align with one of Pacific's "Six Core Values," which is Diversity and Inclusion. This event not only goes against our values, but also negatively impacts the wellbeing of LGBTQIA+ Pacificans as a blatant threat to their safety, mental health, and inclusion as valuable members of the Pacific community. Our goal is to stop this event from happening by letting the Pacific administration know that we do not want this event to occur on our campus.

We will not stand for this type of hatred and bigotry to thrive on our campus. Pacific is a safe space for ALL, and we have a responsibility to protect our students, faculty, staff, and community members from this hate speech, which is defined by the American Library Association as "any form of expression through which speakers intend to vilify, humiliate, or incite hatred against a group or a class of persons on the basis of race, religion, skin color, sexual identity, gender identity, ethnicity, disability, or national origin."

We also encourage you to follow this link to find an email template to send to Pacific administration. We need to let the administration know that we will not tolerate this hate on Pacific's campuses. Please feel free to email to as many people as you may like, and add your own testimony about how this event has and will impact you.
