Stop the annexation of 800 acres in Fountain Inn

The Issue

My wife and I have been lifelong residents of Fountain Inn, and we've watched with heavy hearts as our beloved community has drastically changed over the years. We have seen the lush landscapes give way to vast expanses of subdivisions, and the tranquility of our town succumbing to the ever-growing hustle and bustle. The area we hold dear has been marred by rampant development, imposing tremendous stress on our environments and our community’s way of life. No longer is the serenity of our town intact - it’s been replaced by traffic congestion and a sense of unsettlement.

Recently, the proposed annexation of 800 acres for residential development by the city of Fountain Inn has become the latest threat. The land marked for this development envelops Scuffletown Road, Bethany Road, and Highway 417, edging precariously close to Rudolf Gordon Elementary School, casting a shadow over our children's safety and community's peace. Our own farm, nestled east in Laurens County, is being eclipsed by ever-expanding subdivisions.

Our community is weary - tired of the indiscriminate mass development that doesn't take into account the voices and concerns of its residents. Our infrastructure, our roads, our schools are under unimaginable strain to cater to this relentless expansion. The distinctive character of our town, the calmness we once knew, is slipping away. Fountain Inn's unique charm is being lost to bulldozers and construction trucks that churn through our fields and homes.

We understand the need for progress and growth, but it should not come at the expense of the residents or the natural environment. There are responsible ways to accommodate growth that incorporate sustainable practices and respect community needs. The city should consider green spaces, improved infrastructure, and sensible urban planning that prioritizes existing residents’ quality of life instead of overwhelming it.

This plea goes out to all those who call Fountain Inn home—let us stand together to protect our town's integrity before it's too late. We must urge the city council and planning authorities to reconsider this proposition of annexation. Instead, let us work collaboratively to find balanced growth strategies that do not compromise our community's identity. Our voices must be heard, and our town's future must be secured from unwarranted and unchecked development.

Please join us in fighting to preserve our community—sign this petition to put a halt to the annexation of these 800 acres. Fountain Inn deserves a future where growth is in harmony with the essence of what makes our community special.
