Stop the Aluminum fence on 57th St S and Crestwood Boulevard.

The Issue

Hello Neighbor,

On Wednesday August 9th a variance request is going before the Planning and Zoning board of the City of Birmingham to construct a 6 to 8 foot tall aluminum fence in Crestwood North on the corner of 57th Street and Crestwood Boulevard. I believe that this fence is unnecessary and no hardship is imposed on the owner by not having the fence - the construction of this fence would be detrimental to the character of the neighborhood, potentially attract graffiti, reduce property value, and not be the aesthetically pleasing gateway into Crestwood North which the neighborhood deserves. To be clear, the reason a variance is being requested is because the fence is illegal under Birmingham City Zoning code - and I believe this proposed fence is not beneficial enough to anyone to grant the variance.

The property owner states that the fence is to stop loitering, parking, littering, and sign posting on the property -- I lived on 9th Ave S from 2016 to 2021, and now live on 8th Ct S and 57th St was my primary way in and out of the neighborhood. In all of that time, I rarely if ever saw littering, parking, or loitering. Signs would be posted occasionally for yard sales and similar temporary events but I believe those could be addressed by means such as landscaping and tree planting, not constructing a 6 to 8 foot tall metal fencing.

With that - please sign and stop this fence from being constructed on Crestwood Boulevard and 57th St S!
