Stop the Albanese Government from sharing Australian’s biometric data with the USA and ICE

The issue

Any future release or sharing of Australian’s biometric or personal identification data must not occur without clear, enforceable public oversight, full transparency, and democratic accountability.

For many Australians, myself included, our sense of national identity is rooted deeply in the ideal of independence. So when I learned of the Albanese Government’s decision to provide the Trump administration with access to Australians’ biometric data and personal identification documents, I felt an overwhelming sense of betrayal. Where is our independence from the United States in this arrangement? How can we possibly give away such sensitive information without considering the long-term implications for our national sovereignty and personal privacy?

This decision raises legitimate concerns over privacy, security, and individual rights. Biometric data, unlike passwords or PINs, cannot be changed once compromised. In an era where data breaches are rampant, is it worth risking the safety of our personal information at the discretion of another nation’s government? Moreover, what checks and balances are in place to ensure this information is not misused, shared onward, or retained indefinitely?

According to a 2023 study by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, a staggering 68% of Australians are worried about their online privacy. With the exchange of biometric data between nations, this concern is only likely to grow, further eroding public trust. Yet the bilateral agreement lacks transparency, offering Australians little to no insight into how their data will be stored, protected, accessed, or used by the Trump administration.

We must urge our government to prioritise Australia’s independent decision-making and the privacy rights of its citizens. Rather than advancing arrangements that compromise our national interests, the Albanese Government should focus on strengthening comprehensive data protection laws that shield Australians from foreign misuse, overreach, or surveillance.

By signing this petition, we send a clear message to Prime Minister Albanese and his administration: protect our biometric data and uphold our right to privacy. Stand firm in safeguarding Australia’s independence and the trust of its people. Let us not be swayed by external pressures, no matter how powerful they may seem. Sign this petition to stop this data exchange agreement and ensure Australia remains a sovereign, independent nation.
