Stop the Agora Cyber Charter School layoffs

Stop the Agora Cyber Charter School layoffs
The Issue
This could be any Cyber Charter School.
I am a mother of three #AgoraProud students: a daughter in 11th grade, an autistic son in 10th grade, and another daughter in 3rd grade. We have been with Agora Cyber Charter School for 12 years. During this time, the dedicated teachers and staff have gone above and beyond, becoming like family to us. I still hear from teachers and staff, even years after my children have graduated from their classes. This deep connection and sense of community is what makes Agora so special, and now, it’s on the verge of disappearing with the planned layoff of 170 employees.
On Monday, December 15, 2025, we witnessed the Agora Cyber Charter School board make a heart-wrenching decision to lay off close to 170 dedicated staff members. These are the people who have shaped this school, creating a nurturing and supportive environment for all students, including those with special needs like my son. Right before Thanksgiving break, these individuals, who pour their hearts into their work every day, received a hint of this devastating news, leaving them in uncertainty over their future. Yet, back in August, these same individuals were rehired by the board, fully aware of impending cyber school funding cuts. This lack of transparency and forewarning is unjust to the very people who ensure the success and functionality of Agora.
Agora Cyber Charter School has built a unique environment that cannot be replicated in a traditional school setting. My children and countless others have thrived because of the personalized attention and care provided by the committed staff. Layoffs of this magnitude threaten to dismantle the supportive network our students rely on and the quality of education our children receive.
There are other options that should be considered before taking such drastic measures. We need to explore alternative solutions that don't involve sacrificing the jobs of those who are essential to our children's education and development. The board must prioritize transparent discussions and a collaborative approach to address budget issues while protecting the interests of both staff and students.
During the Dec 15th meeting parents pleaded with the board for 2 1/2 hours to find other ways to keep these people. The board has a rainy day fund, they are unwilling to use. Parents asked for fundraising to help. But the board wouldn't even consider it.
This situation affects not only the staff but also hundreds of families who have invested their trust and hopes in Agora. Losing these educators and staff members would be a devastating blow to our community.
We urge the Agora Cyber Charter School board to reconsider their decision and explore all available options that do not involve laying off valuable employees. Let’s come together and show our support for those who have supported us throughout our educational journey.
Please sign this petition to stop the layoffs and help preserve the Agora community that so many of us cherish.
