The Snowy Mountain Brumbies are more than just a part of Australia's landscape; they represent a key piece of our national heritage. The ancestors of these iconic animals played a pivotal role in our history by carrying the Light Horsemen who bravely fought in World War I. They have been immortalized in Australian culture through the works of Banjo Paterson and celebrated in the film, 'The Man from Snowy River'.

However, these spirited brumbies are now under threat. An aerial shooting has been planned for 9th June 2026 aimed at culling their population in Kosciusko National Park. This action represents not only an act of cruelty but also a disregard for our colonial and cultural legacy. It is imperative that we halt this proposed intervention and protect the brumbies from imminent harm.

The brumbies have been inhabiting this region since the 1800s, becoming a symbol of endurance and freedom. Their existence should not be threatened due to alternating management strategies. Therefore, management of the Snowy Mountain Brumbies must be returned to the people who cherish and understand their significance. This includes working towards listing these magnificent animals on the WORLD HERITAGE SPECIES LIST, ensuring their protection from extinction and recognizing their profound cultural and historical importance.

To propose a future cohabitation strategy, we can establish a management plan in consultation with local communities, indigenous leaders, and environmental experts. This plan should focus on sustainable population controls, habitat conservation, and tourism promotion that respects the natural environment and the cultural heritage of the brumbies.

The potential loss of these brumbies is a call to arms for all Australians to defend what is quintessentially part of our national story. We cannot allow state and government policies to perpetuate animal cruelty, especially towards species that symbolize our shared history and identity.

We urge everyone who resonates with this cause to vocalize their opposition to the planned aerial shooting and demand that these majestic horses be granted the protection and management they deserve. By signing this petition, you are making a stand against animal cruelty and supporting the preservation of a vital piece of Australian heritage. Our brumbies depend on you; let us not fail them.
