Stop the Adoption of the "Guidelines for Determining Book Placement"

Stop the Adoption of the "Guidelines for Determining Book Placement"
The Issue
As an individual deeply invested in the intellectual freedom and diversity of our public libraries, I have a profound concern about the Greater Clark Hills Regional Library Advisory Board's consideration of the "Guidelines for Determining Book Placement". These guidelines, passed by the Columbia County Board of Commissioners on September 4, 2024, threaten to narrow the scope of information accessible to our community, especially to our young adults.
The adoption of these guidelines would be a significant step towards the censorship of information and the promotion of a singular, limited worldview. It could quietly dissolve the valuable Teen/Young Adult spaces in the public libraries of the region. Designed as safe havens for exploration, question-asking, and individual growth, these spaces are at risk of becoming echoes of uniformity rather than catalysts for reflective thought.
The American Library Association strongly advocates against such filters of information. In the Library Bill of Rights, it states that "Libraries should provide materials and information presenting all points of view on current and historical issues" ('Library Bill of Rights', 1996). Ignoring this fundamental principle of public information services is not only ethically problematic but also directly undermines the educational capacity of our libraries.
In a time when critical thinking and an understanding of diverse perspectives are more important than ever, we cannot allow these guidelines to be adopted and stifle the voices that make us a vibrant, multilayered society. Libraries are pillars of democracy, offering free and unrestricted knowledge to all individuals, and we have a responsibility to uphold their mission.
Let's preserve our libraries as dynamic, diverse spaces of learning. Please sign this petition and join me in urging the Greater Clark Hills Regional Library Advisory Board to reject the adoption of the "Guidelines for Determining Book Placement". Your signature is a strong commitment to intellectual freedom.
