Stop the academic uniform policy at Greater Lawrence Tech

Stop the academic uniform policy at Greater Lawrence Tech
The Issue
At Greater Lawrence Technical High School in Andover, MA, clothing has always been a way for students to express themselves. Having the freedom to choose what we wear during academic weeks has been an important part of our shared school experience. It is not just about clothing—it is about individuality, self-expression, and creating a sense of belonging within our community.
The recent decision to implement a uniform policy during academic weeks threatens to take that away. After years of enjoying a free dress code that allowed us to feel comfortable and unique, this abrupt change feels like a step backward, especially as young adults preparing for the future. Expression of identity through clothing is an essential part of personal and social development, and restricting it only harms our growth.
It is also important to recognize that the dress code already in place at GLTS is strict, outdated, and often unreasonable. Students are already held to high standards of appearance. Adding mandatory uniforms on top of this creates unnecessary restrictions and risks damaging, rather than improving, the school environment.
Research has shown that students perform better academically and socially when they are comfortable and free to express themselves. According to the National Association of Secondary School Principals, flexible dress codes can improve morale and social interaction, which in turn support stronger academic results. Limiting those freedoms could negatively impact mental health, engagement, and overall school culture.
On top of this, requiring uniforms adds a financial burden for families. Purchasing GLTS-branded apparel specifically for academic weeks is an extra cost that many households cannot easily afford. The benefit does not outweigh the expense.
This decision does not only affect our clothing—it affects our comfort, our confidence, and the culture of our school. We, the students of Greater Lawrence Technical High School, urge the administration to reconsider this policy and maintain free dress during academic weeks.
Sign this petition to stand with us in protecting student expression, challenging outdated restrictions, and preserving the inclusive, supportive school environment that makes GLTS special.
