Stop The 64 Bus Route on Walters, support the existing the Outer Link route!

The issue

Businesses: less foot traffic on Dominion rd!! The Outer link service between St Lukes-Newmarket is being stopped. It will be replaced by the 64 bus along Walters rd instead of the existing route along Balmoral-Dominion rd.

Residents: The Buses are Increasing!!  Every 12-15 minutes, in both directions along Walters Rd, from 6.05am to midnight, seven days a week from 17th November 2024. Parking may be removed in narrow sections of Walters rd, impacting neighboring streets.

Since 2020 and the closure of the Mt Eden/Maungawhau Train Station - "temporary" replacement bus services (64 bus route) have run along Walters Road one way, and Onslow rd the opposite way, to provide patrons of the Western Line train a free connection between Mt Eden,  Kingsland and Newmarket train stations.

The 64 bus has extremely poor patronage, but causes significant disruption to Walters Rd residents (particularly for those with houses built close to the road). In addition, there are safety and congestion concerns for parents and students who attend the early childcare centre on Walters rd and nearby Kowhai school.

Now Auckland Transport are extending this route to St Lukes, to compensate for changes to the crosstown Outer link bus service that will cease between St Lukes and Newmarket.

The entire process is being jointly funded by City Rail Link (CRL) and Auckland Transport (AT) with use of tax and rate payer money.

Increasingly, it is looking like this decision will be PERMANENT and AT are deliberately creating conditions to ensure a review will give them the desired result.

  • Bus stops are being constructed.
  • A review is only promised in mid 2028 - 18 months after reopening of Maungawhau Station.
  • The review only focuses on patronage (which will increase once Outer link services cease).
  • No public consultation to date on the 64 route
  • AT will not rule out removing more parking in the narrow sections of Walters rd to make way for buses

There are better and alternative options for 64 that are supported by local community and Dominion Road businesses (dotted line in map), the most obvious of these is to use the existing Outer link route along the main arterial Dominion rd.

Bus 64 along Walters isn't adding value! Walters rd residents and surrounding areas already have good access to a crosstown service (Kingsland-Newmarket train). The 64 route is poorly designed and a wasteful use of resources and taxpayers funds.
